EcoMINEd: Building a sustainable green Europe through Minecraft

EcoMINEd uses Minecraft as a structured, game-based learning environment to engage young people in sustainable development and active citizenship. Coordinated by the City of Espoo, the partnership co-creates five immersive Minecraft worlds built around real sustainability challenges, trains 65 youth workers in game-based methodologies, runs international game events for young people and leaves behind a web platform and an online community that keep the model in use.

Why this project

Young people spend a large part of their lives in digital and gaming environments, yet youth work rarely uses those environments deliberately to teach sustainability or citizenship. EcoMINEd gives youth workers a validated way to do so.

Objectives

  • Strengthen the capacity of youth workers in Finland, Spain, Belgium and Serbia to use structured, game-based digital methodologies built on Minecraft.
  • Design and validate a transferable Minecraft-based educational model for immersive sustainability learning.
  • Empower young people through transnational initiatives that combine sustainability, participation and teamwork.
  • Ensure long-term impact through a sustainable support network and an online community.

Activities

  • Co-creation of five immersive Minecraft worlds addressing real-life sustainability challenges.
  • A structured game-based curriculum and a Training of Trainers pathway for youth workers, followed by national trainings.
  • International game events for young people from the partner countries.
  • A web platform and a Discord-based community to ensure long-term use of the model.
  • Advocacy actions and an online campaign to extend the project's reach.

Expected results

These are the results the project set out to produce. They are commitments made in the application, not outcomes already achieved.

  • A transferable Minecraft-based educational model for immersive sustainability learning.
  • 65 youth workers trained in game-based methodologies and able to deliver high-quality sustainability education.
  • Transnational youth initiatives that enhance participation and teamwork.
  • A scalable blueprint and a peer-to-peer online community for long-term use and replication.

Who it is for

Youth workers and educators; young people; municipalities and youth organisations interested in game-based learning.
